These steps are always the first ones I perform when "working" my pictures.

This is the original, straight out of the camera image.
Click IMAGE - ADJUSTMENTS - LEVELS or in Windows press CNTRL L
Again click on the image for the full view
To adjust the shadows and highlights manually, drag the black and white Input Levels sliders to the edge of the first group of pixels on either end of the histogram. I generally set the center slider at about 90 for a bit more contrast.
These steps are quick and easy, but they add enormously to creating a better image. It is the first correction I make to every image.
